St John The Theologian Serbian Orthodox Church,  Glendale Missouri,  March 2015

Erected September 25, 1921

Rebuilt August 13, 1934

For Sale March 20, 2015

Okay, so here is kind of a funny story.  St. John Serbian Orthodox Church in Glendale Missouri is up for sale.  An artist friend of mine went to look at it since it is close to where she lives and she wondered if she could convert it into an art studio.  While she was there the real estate agent told her the following story.  Since this is a case of I heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend, some of the facts and most of the narration have mutated.

So this real estate agent (lets call her Marie) comes to do an inspection of the newly listed property that happens to be a functioning Serbian Orthodox church.  Marie walks into the sanctuary and walks among the pews.  Then she goes to look at the front of the sanctuary and walks toward the altar.  Suddenly she is startled by a scream from though a side door, "STOP!!!!!"  A man then rushes up to her and says, "NO WOMAN HAS EVER WALKED PAST THE FIRST PEW!"  Marie, who was rather alarmed, of course stopped and the man (a priest) then quickly stated that no women were allowed to approach the altar.  Marie explained that the property had been listed with her company and that she would need to look around and would also have to guide prospective buyers (who might also be women) throughout the building.  The priest asked why couldn't any women just send a man to look for her? And Marie replied that that wasn't an option.

Well Marie didn't get to inspect the rest of the property that day, but it was decided that the de-sanctification process would have to be speeded up.  This mainly entailed transporting a "holy" relic back to Serbia.  The relic in question was supposedly a bone of a saint.  I don't know which saint and I am a bit suspicious about the legitimacy of these relics.  For example while looking up information about the Serbian Orthodox Church I read that four separate churches or monasteries claim to have the skull of
St. John Chrysostom.  I found no reference to "St. John the Four Headed", so I assume some or all of those claims are in error.
